US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling w/ CA Boater Card
Prerequisite - Part : No prior experience needed. Students must be 14 years of age or older.
Prerequisite - Part 2: Ability to swim 50 yards. Students must be 14 years of age or older.
A two-part blended learning course. Part 1 is four 2-hour instructor led online classes, and Part 2 is an 8-hour instructor led on-the-water boat handling skills session. This course is for boaters of all skills levels interested in learning or improving knowledge and skills to safely operate a small powerboat.
Part 1 and Part 2 may be taken one without the other, but Part 1 should be taken before Part 2. Successful completion of Part 1 and Part 2, and a passing grade on the written exams, is required to qualify for the US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling Certification and the California Boater Card.
The objective of the course is to teach the necessary skills and knowledge for you to become a safe and confident operator of outboard powered vessels less than 26’ in length. By the end of this course, you will know about the powerboat and outboard motors, required equipment, boat preparation, launching and trailering. Additionally, you will know basic terminology and boat systems, navigation rules, safety procedures, and be able to perform basic boat handling skills including docking, turning, securing a boat, anchoring, minimum control speed, and crew overboard.
