Prerequisite: Shields 2 or equivalent experience
For students who have completed Shields 2 and are ready to pursue the US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification. Each session will begin with a brief review, and then you will get to spend the rest of the time sailing and perfecting skills on the water.
Course and evaluation topics for this extensive sailing course includes sail theory,docking, tacking, jibing, crew coordination, navigation rules and aids to navigation, anchoring, reefing, heaving to, and crew overboard recovery.
To allow for more time on the water you will complete the written exam online. Prior to the start of your class you will receive access to the US Sailing online test which must be completed prior to your third class session. Your active participation at home, in the classroom and on the water is essential for success. Basic Keelboat Certification requires a passing grade on both the written and the practical test.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive your US SAILING Basic Keelboat Certification and be ready to move on to Basic Cruising 1.
