Summer Youth Leadership Program

Prerequisite: 
Participants must be 14 years old OR entering the 9th grade, have basic sailing skills and enjoy working with children.

A program specifically for teens in our Summer Sailing Camps!
Our Youth Leadership Program (YLP) provides training and experience in teamwork, responsibility, communication and job skills. YLP prepares students for employment as camp counselors, assistant sailing instructors and leadership roles in a fun and supportive environment on the water.
Participants will receive 30 hours of training prior to and at the start of the camp season. The training will include:
•       Group Management
•       Instruction Techniques
•       Water Safety
•       Team Building
•       First Aid/CPR/AED Certification

Additionally, students accepted into the Youth Leadership Program must obtain a California Boater Card and a US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling Certification by completing an OCC Safe Powerboat Handling Part 1 and Par 2 class prior to Monday, June 10, 2024. The fee for Part 1 and Part 2 is included in the YLP fee.
After the training is complete our YLP students will schedule a minimum of two weeks to participate in our summer camp as CIT’s - Summer Camps run Monday to Friday, June 10 to August 9, 2024. As CITs they will lead games and activities with campers, give sailboat rides to younger campers, help campers rig and derig boats, assist with check in and check out, and plan and organize fun camp activities.

Scholarships are available: To be considered for scholarship awards, students must meet eligibility requirements and demonstrate characteristics like flexibility, tolerance and open-mindedness. More information will be made available at the time of the applicant’s interview.
