Basic Training (BST) - STCW - Basic

This Basic Training (BST) course meets STCW-95 requirements and consists of four modules of training. All modules are approved by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and meet the requirements of 46 CFR and the STCW code for USCG license endorsement.

 
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Training: 16 hours
    • Fire prevention and response
  • Elementary First Aid: 8 hours
    • Focus on shipboard medical emergencies
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR): 6 hours
    • Focus on life aboard ship
  • Personal Survival Techniques: 12 hours
    • Emergency preparedness
Students with satisfactory level of completion will receive:
  • American Red Cross First Aid and CPR certificate
  • Certificates of Completion showing compliance with 46 CFR and STCW code

Certificates of completion may be presented to the USCG within one year of the training for credential or license endorsement.
 
Course material includes classroom instruction and participation in practical skills, including swimming and firefighting. Assessments are both written and practical. All students must be physically fit, know how to swim, and be prepared to demonstrate skills. Successful completion of this course requires candidate to right an inverted life raft, demonstrates proper donning of life saving equipment, and tread water while remaining afloat without aid for at least 1 minute. Physical portion of course is rigorous.
 
This “hands-on” training requires the student to demonstrate the skill & ability to prove that they are qualified to serve aboard seagoing vessels. Trip to San Diego required for 1/2 day of course.
 
Basic Training is required of all mariners with a license over 200GT, Able Seamen, and mariners with licenses less than 200GT who take passengers for hire into foreign waters.

1 hour lunch break built in to class.
 
PREREQUISITES: Ability to swim and tread water. Physical fitness to perform practical exercises.
