ECDIS - Electronic Chart Display Information System
Mariners successfully completing the Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) course will be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skill and understanding of ECDIS navigation and electronic charts to undertake the duties of a navigational watch officer defined by Table A-II/1of the Seafarers Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code, as amended.
This will include the understanding of the competencies in Table A-II of the STCW Code, but is not limited to:
Capabilities and limitations of ECDIS operations
How to interpret and analyze information obtained from ECDIS
Management of operational procedures, system files and data
How to install, correct and use electronic charts
How to determine the validity of sensor data (including radar overlays)
Potential errors in interpretation and presentation
Proper operational and alarm settings for Route Monitoring
How to access the ship’s log and data playback functions
How to plan and execute a Voyage Passage utilizing ECDIS
How to determine ship’s position using ECDIS with specific knowledge of its operational principles, limitations, sources of errors, detection of misrepresentations of information and methods of correction to obtain an accurate fix in accordance with A-II/2 of STCW Code.
