Prerequisite: Successful completion of Shields 2 or recent equivalent keelboat sailing experience as skipper and crew. Participants must be at least 14 years old and able to swim 50 yards.
In Basic Cruising 1 you move from sailing smaller keelboats to larger cruising sailboats. This course is for students with intermediate sailing skills, but little or no experience running a mid-sized auxiliary cruising boat. Basic systems will be examined including water, electrical and engine systems. Course topics include practical skills such as docking, maneuvering under power and sail, reefing, managing heel and person-in-water rescue. Completion of Basic Cruising 1 prepares you for sail training trips to Catalina and the Northern Channel Islands, and the US Sailing Basic Cruising Certification Course. Bring lunch, water, and a snack each day.
Class size: Min 3 - Max 5 students
