Prerequisite: Successful completion of Shields 1, MP Intermediate Keelboat, or recent equivalent keelboat sailing experience as both skipper and crew. Participants must be at least 14 years old and able to swim 50 yards.
An advanced sailing class for students who have completed Shields 1 and are ready to build on their sailing skills aboard the 30’ Shields. Most of the class time is spent on the water in the afternoon breeze, refining techniques and mastering the advanced boat-handling skills required to sail a larger keelboat with confidence. You will review skills from Shields 1 before moving on to a deeper focus on sail trim and shape, heel control, wind shifts, helm balance, apparent wind, anchoring, jury rigging, crew coordination, and safety. When the weather permits, ocean sailing is also included.
By the end of this course, you will be prepared to continue to the US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification course or Basic Cruising 1
Class size: Min 6 – Max 12 students
