Personal Survival Techniques (PST) Module (12 hours)
This Personal Survival Techniques course meets STCW Code Section A-VI/1 and 46 CFR 11.302(a)(1) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)(1) requirements, equipping mariners with essential survival skills for emergency situations at sea. Through classroom instruction and practical in-water assessments, students will develop the competencies needed to respond effectively during maritime emergencies.
Course Content:
  • Principles of Survival at Sea: Covers essential survival strategies, including prioritizing needs, maintaining buoyancy, and preserving energy to increase chances of rescue.
  • Abandoning Ship & Survival Techniques: Teaches procedures for safely abandoning ship and managing survival situations, emphasizing emergency preparedness and decision-making.
  • Lifesaving Appliances: Provides an overview of lifesaving appliances found on ships, including life rafts, life jackets, and other essential equipment.
  • Personal Lifesaving Equipment: Hands-on training in the use and maintenance of personal lifesaving devices, focusing on proper donning and functionality.
  • Survival Craft Familiarization: Introduces different types of survival craft and associated equipment, with guidance on boarding, launching, and maintaining craft in emergency situations.
  • Helicopter Safety: Covers safe procedures for helicopter evacuation, including signaling and proper coordination with rescue personnel.
Practical Assessments (In-Water): Students will complete rigorous practical exercises in-water, demonstrating competencies in:
  • Righting an inverted life raft
  • Safely boarding and maneuvering in survival craft
  • Swimming while donning a life jacket
  • Treading water and staying afloat unaided
Certification: Successful completion of this module results in a USCG-approved Certificate of Completion, satisfying STCW Code and CFR requirements for license endorsement.
Prerequisites: Students must possess adequate swimming ability and physical fitness to perform all practical exercises effectively. This training is mandatory for mariners with licenses exceeding 200 GT, Able Seamen, and mariners operating vessels under 200 GT carrying passengers for hire in foreign waters.
