Basic Firefighting Module (16 hours)
This module, offered by Orange Coast College in partnership with Maritime Institute in San Diego, provides comprehensive training in fire prevention and response. It meets the Fire Prevention and Firefighting training standards outlined in Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-2 of the STCW Code, as well as 46 CFR 11.302(e) and 46 CFR 12.602(e).
Course Content:
  • Fire Behavior and Dynamics: Covers fundamental concepts of fire behavior, including the fire triangle, fire stages, and confined space fire hazards, to enhance awareness and improve emergency response readiness.
  • Fire Prevention: Emphasizes practical strategies to identify and mitigate fire hazards onboard vessels, focusing on preventive measures to reduce the risk of onboard fires.
  • Firefighting Equipment and Techniques: Provides hands-on training in the use of firefighting equipment, including fire extinguishers, hoses, and breathing apparatuses. Students will practice direct firefighting techniques under controlled live-fire conditions.
  • Emergency Response: Teaches protocols for responding to fire emergencies, including containment, evacuation procedures, and communication practices essential for team coordination in fire emergencies.
Live-Fire Training: This course includes live-fire exercises conducted at Maritime Institute facilities in San Diego, providing students with realistic, hands-on experience in firefighting and fire containment strategies.
Certification: Upon successful completion, students receive a USCG-approved Certificate of Completion for compliance with 46 CFR and STCW Code, valid for submission to the USCG for credentialing or license endorsement within one year.
Prerequisites: Students must possess adequate swimming ability and physical fitness to perform all practical exercises effectively. This training is mandatory for mariners with licenses exceeding 200 GT, Able Seamen, and mariners operating vessels under 200 GT carrying passengers for hire in foreign waters.
