Science for Young Pirates

Come explore the science behind boats and sailing in a camp full of experiments, hands-on learning and
pirate fun.  From boat building to navigation and pirate adventure.  Each module seeks to unlock the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) we experience on and around boats and the information ties directly to the Next Generation Science Standards. 

Module 1 - Boat Building
Engineer your own boat and learn about important properties that keeps the boat afloat. 
 
Module 2 - Simple Machines
Learn how sails are hoisted easily with the physics of simple machines that make sailboats work. 
Get a taste of sailing safely by the OCC docks and venture into the harbor on a Harbor 20 sailboat.
Module 3 - Wind and Weather
Master the weather!  Build a barometer, measure the wind, then create your own sail plan and map.

Module 4 - Pirate Day
Break out your pirate gear and prepare for a battle of the pirate crews.  Who can build a better catapult?  We'll find out!
 
Prerequisite:
Students must be able to swim 50 yards and be entering  5th, 6th  or 7th grade in the fall.
